It was indeed a most enlightening experience for the young people in attendance at the event which held on the 12th of August. Contents and activities at the symposium were crafted to elicit extensive participation and create an atmosphere where young people can share ideas and air their views in relation to IYD 2019 theme – Transforming Education; activities included panel discussions, pep talks, idea presentations, and more.
The climax of it all was an interactive session with the Honorable Minister for Education - Professor Paul Mavima who attested to the rich deposit of intelligence, creativity and knowledge in Africa’s youth having listened to the thoughts shared by the bright young minds present at the strategic symposium.
The discourse with the Honorable Minister presented an opportunity for the young people to further engage in the development of ideas for the much needed upgrade in the system of Education in Africa. Using Zimbabwe as a case study, the Honorable Minister highlighted major flaws in Africa’s Educational System with proffered solutions to combat these flaws. He specifically stated the need for patriotism, an updated competence-based curriculum and a change of the mindset of teachers whom he identified as influencers.
The Honorable Minister, Professor Paul Mavima, expressed his great pleasure in the ongoing work of the Africa for Africa Youth Initiative and further stressed the core ideals of the organisation as he called on the young people in Africa to continue in the development and implementation of innovative ideas that will transform our societies and nations in Africa.
